land use and urban design
Land Use and Urban Design was a studio based subject focused on producing a single targeted plan for a specific 1km x 1km area within Moreland. First, students were required to analyse a broad 10km x 10km area around the site from built form and demographic perspectives, and use this initial research to narrow the focus to one overarching intervention target. Finally, students were asked to generate three urban design codes that could be expected to change the form of the area then run a sensitivity analysis based on three possible futures. We were encouraged to be creative in our code generation and think “outside the box” when coming up with possible futures.
Through a broad analysis of a 10 km x 10km area in Melbourne’s inner north I recognised the child’s experience as one that could benefit from planning attention. This was demonstrated through several visualisations generated using QGIS and Australian Bureau of Statistics datasets. Academic literature related to the urban child’s experience was then used to inform a fine-grain analysis of the area and this analysis then informed the generation of three possible codes to address identified concerns. Producing this document allowed for significant development in my technical abilities, ultimately requiring a working knowledge of: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, QGIS, and RStudio. Further, the chance to think creatively about possible futures to inform the sensitivity analysis was an unfortunately rare opportunity in the Master of Urban Planning however doing so was invaluable in understanding and feeling where my codes sit in the longer timescale of the city.
